Duties and Responsibilities

This internship is located within the Disaster risk Reduction Section (DRS) of the Information and Communications Technology and Disaster Risk Reduction Division of ESCAP. The internship is UNPAID and full-time for a period of two to six months, depending on the needs of the division or office. Qualified applicants who can commit to a longer internship duration will be preferred. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) in-person under the supervision of the Chief, Disaster Risk Reduction Section and there levant officer/s within DRS who are leading task teams and projects. Applicants who wish to do their internship remotely will be considered on a case- by-case basis. Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background and the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to: • Contribute to the quantitative and qualitative analysis on the socio-economic impacts of disasters • Assist in organizing international conferences and meetings • Carry out other ad hoc tasks as required by the Section and the Division

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

Intern Specific text

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
