Duties and Responsibilities


 

The internship is unpaid and the intern will be based in the Resident Coordinator’s Office (RCO), New Delhi, India. The UN Resident Coordinator (RC) is the highest-ranking representative of the UN Development System at the country level. The RC leads the UN Country Team (UNCT) and coordinates UN support to the country in implementing the 2030 Agenda. The Resident Coordinator is the designated representative of – and reports to – the UN Secretary-General.   The Resident Coordinator is supported by a core team of professional staff in the Resident Coordinator’s Office (RCO), including an economist / development coordination officer who provides socio-economic analysis, substantive advice on economic and sustainable development policies to the RC, plans and directs knowledge generation and management related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and supports the RCO coordination function with data-driven evidence-based analysis and planning as necessary.  RCO India seeks 1-2 interns to support the RCO economist / development coordination officer for a period of six months. Tasks include but are not limited to supporting the United Nations Country Team in India on research, analysis and policy support related matters and other functions, as may be delegated.  Under the guidance and supervision of the RCO economist / development coordination officer, the intern will contribute to the research, analysis and policy support work of the RCO and the wider UNCT. While responsibilities vary over time according to the needs of the office, typical tasks include the following: • Collect and prepare socio-economic data for analysis by the UNCT, including from national and international administrative data sources as well as unit-level survey microdata.  • Prepare and update data visualizations for use by the UNCT including by using innovative tools and technologies. • Assist with assembling and drafting of policy briefs, working papers, non-papers, common country analysis updating, and monthly updates to the UNCT by collecting, updating and analysing key data and insights. • Aid in the development and planning of country-specific/country-level workshops/seminars focused on analysis.  • Contribute to socio-political analysis of India and its 36 States and Union Territories, including both domestic development priorities, as well as its South-South and Triangular Cooperation activities, and leadership role in the region and globally, including at the United Nations and other multilateral and regional bodies. • Support coordination of UNCT meetings, and record detailed meeting minutes for documentation and internal distribution. • Assist with various communication tasks, including drafting communication materials and posting/sharing relevant content on official Indian social media accounts, as directed. • Support development of presentations, reports, and shareable informational materials that are easily understandable and digestible for the public and development partners. • Liaise and coordinate with appropriate units, divisions, and sections internally, regarding research, analysis, reporting and other relevant matters. • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications/special skills


 

The applicants to the internship programme must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).  The applicants to the internship programme shall have the following required and/or desirable qualifications and special skills: • Experience using Excel to manipulate data and produce graphs, tables and figures is required. • Experience using Stata, R or Python to manipulate and prepare data sets and undertake econometric analysis, especially using unit-level survey microdata is desirable. • Experience producing data visualizations with R, Tableau, Flourish or similar is desirable.  No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations internship programme.  Your training, education, advanced course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages


 

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship.  Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations secretariat. Knowledge of Hindi and other national languages is desirable.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
