Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) is responsible for providing leadership, operational support and oversight of the United Nations Security Management System (UNSMS) globally. This internship opportunity is located in the Office of the Under-Secretary-General (OUSG), in the Strategic Planning Service (SPS), in the Strategic Planning Unit (SPU), within UNDSS. The role of SPU is to support Senior Management on key substantive issues related to strategic planning of the Department. SPS contributes to UNDSS' efforts to enable the implementation of the United Nations mandate while ensuring safety and security of United Nations personnel. The duration of the internship is for a period of three (3) to six (6) months, depending on the needs of the Department. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days (35 hours) per week under the supervision of a staff member in the office to which they are assigned. This internship is designed to be in person and full-time (35 hours or more). It may be adjusted to part-time (less than 34 hours) upon request of the successful candidate. The internship can be adapted to accommodate hybrid arrangements (20 hours per week), on an exceptional basis. Within assigned authority, the intern is expected to undertake the following duties: • Assist in day-to-day work of the Department-level ERM along with Secretariat-level ERM; • Assist in day-to-day work for formulating ERM processes in Country Planning/Programming; • Assist in updating Risk Registers, Risk Treatment Response Plans, Scorecards, etc.; • Assist in the implementation/research of Strategic Foresight briefs (as and when needed); • Conduct research, compile information from different sources and assist with preparation of background documents for ERM, as requested; • Assist in preparing for meetings with partners, other entities, other Departments, etc.; • Contribute to data entry, updating database and SharePoint and programme related documents; • Assist in editing and revision of reports, briefs and other documents as needed; • Assist in drafting correspondence, talking points, reports, agenda, feedback and presentations; • Assist with preparation and dissemination of materials including meeting notes and reports; • Perform other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications/special skills

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the followingcconditions must be met: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above). OFFICIAL WRITTEN PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY SUPPORTING ONE OF THE ABOVE POSSIBILITIES MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION. 1. Be computer literate and proficient in standard software applications (e.g., MS Office 365 or similar). 2. Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. 3. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. 4. Ability to manage multiple tasks and adhere to deadlines. 5. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. 6. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme. 7. Strong knowledge of one or more analytics and presentation tools (e.g., Power BI, Excel, Tableau, Infogram, PowerPoint, SQL, R, Python) is required. 8. Applicants must be computer literate in standard software applications (e.g., MS Office 365 or similar). 9. Ability to draft articles and make concise notes is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship advertised, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required.

Intern Specific text

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
