The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP's Corporate Services Division (CSD) is the guardian of UNEP's corporate interest, mitigating its exposure to risk and supporting the organization with management tools, plans and related capacity building. It oversees UNEP's efficient and effective management, in line with UNEP's accountability requirements, rules, regulations and UN core values. This position is located in the Legal Unit in UNEP’s Corporate Services Division. Under the overall guidance and direct supervision of the Senior Legal Officer, and within delegated authority, the Legal Intern will be responsible for the following duties: • Assist the Head of the Unit in carrying out legal research and other legal related functions on assigned issues, using existing legal files and alternative sources; • Assist with docketing of incoming requests for legal support, and ensuring that all related correspondence and documentations are appropriately filled, registered and followed up; • Assist in the maintenance of the Legal Unit Case Management System (CMS) for tracking and trend analysis, generate a variety of standard and non-standard statistical and other reports; • Assist with the collection and analysis of data as well as preparation of data presentations and reports for information sharing, responding to queries, knowledge management, planning and decision making; • Support when needed, a variety of administrative duties including processing travel requests and related documents, preparation of travel claims, request for office supplies and equipment scheduling meetings and note taking; • Assist in the preparation and review of draft agreements legal instruments, legal opinion/advice, briefing notes, legal certificates and correspondences; • Assist in research on rules, policies and regulations of the UN, and including privileges and immunities, the use of the UN logo, the name and emblem; • Assist with research in international law as applicable to international public institutions and their dealings with partners; • Assist with any other responsibilities as assigned by the Head of Legal Unit.
